Background to Penarth's Nautical History
The Victorian town of Penarth is one of the few left to boast a working pier, with the 1894 structure still used as the arrival and departure point for such famous ships as 'Balmoral' and 'Waverly'. Using steam-driven piston engines for her motive power, the paddle steamer 'Waverley' provides endless fascination for those who would enjoy watching a traditional ships' engine at work. Built to replace the original 'Waverly' sunk off Dunkirk in 1940, the ship complements the nautical theme that surrounds the whole area.
As the departure point for trips to both Flat Holme and Steep Holme Islands, Penarth is just to the west of Cardiff on the South Wales Coast. From the 200 yard long pier, there is a fine view across the Bristol Channel as far east as the first Severn Bridge, and the coasts of Somerset and Devon to the south. A few minutes stroll will take you from your apartment to the impressive Cardiff Bay Barrage where, for the more energetic, the full length of the Barrage will take you a mile or so up to Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay.
Silver Award
These apartments offer all that you'll find in a Bronze Award apartment, with the addition of more luxurious furnishings and facilities. Apartments larger than a one-bed, will usually have two bathrooms with one being en-suite with a separate guest bathroom. The vast majority of our guests consider Silver Award more than sufficient for their needs.
