Across Cardiff Bay, and only a few miles from Cardiff city centre, is the Victorian town of Penarth. This delightful seaside town has much to offer with a vibrant town centre, tranquil marina development, long esplanade with beautiful pier and stunning local parks and lakes.
Penarth has an excellent reputation for restaurants, cafe bars, galleries and small independent shops, all within walking distance of our Penarth apartments. This ’bijou’ town is often selected by clients who want a more relaxed location but still within a short drive of Cardiff.
Why not take a trip from Penarth Pier on the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world, the Waverley. It is thought that this famous ship is probably the most photographed ship in the world! Built on the Clyde in 1947 - to replace the original Waverley that sunk off Dunkirk in 1940, the Waverley was originally built to sail only between Craigendorran & Arrochar in West Scotland. It is amazing to think that she now sails right round Britain offering regular trips on the Clyde, the Thames, South Coast of England and the Bristol Channel with other calls at various ports & piers throughout the UK.
Owned by a registered Charity and British Registered to carry up to 800 passengers, the Waverley’s on-board facilities include a self-service restaurant, two fully licensed bars, heated observation lounge, ’Jeanie Deans’ tearoom and a souvenir shop. A visit to the engine room is a must on any trip to see the magnificent engines at work.
Formerly a major coal port and terminal for the Bristol Channel paddle steamers, Penarth is just to the west of Cardiff on the South Wales Coast. From the Esplanade there is a fine view across the Bristol Channel to the islands of Flat Holm and Steep Holm and the English Coast opposite.
Whilst no longer a regular stop for steamers, the Victorian Pier at Penarth, between Cardiff Bay and Lavernock Point on the South Wales coast, is still a popular place to spend a sunny afternoon.
