Background to Meridian Quay
Close to Meridian Quay, you will still find evidence of the area's rich maritime history. With its ready access to coal, and the metal smelting techniques of the day, Swansea gained the Victorian nick-name of 'Copperopolis', providing as it did, much of the sheathing for the ships hulls of Nelson's navy. In walking the now totally transformed locality, you will be bound to see many evidences of the vibrant coal and metals trade once carried out in the area where Aurora now stands.
Silver Award
